Today we celebrate the feast of St Lawrence, deacon and martyr, put to death for his faith at Rome in 258, by being roasted on a grid-iron.
Deacons remind us of two things. First, that the Lord Jesus ‘came not to be served (diakonethenai) but to serve (diakonesai)’ – Mark 10, 45. Second, that all of us are called to imitate Him by serving others and helping those in need.
